Iberluffa, an agroforestry project reviving the cultivation of luffa

When nature and creativity collide, interesting initiatives arise, such as the one carried out by Juan Carlos and Itzíar, in Caldas de Reis, a prestigious thermal village in Pontevedra. A project defined by himself as requiring effort, preparation, time, good execution, and a constant dose of enthusiasm.

Through their company Iberian vegetable sponges, offers us totally handmade products from the cultivation and treatment of LUFFA, (cylindrical luffa, of the family Cucurbitaceae), a species of pumpkin widely used in Latin America (Vegetable sponge, pickle or estropajo (Colombia), Paste (Costa Rica), Buchados Paulistas (Brazil).

The fact that their products are of high quality is not coincidental, but thanks to selection and genetic research, as well as the treatment of the fruits from their cultivation and collection in the field to the final finish of the sponges.

The values of rural entrepreneurship are obvious, they help in population settling, creating wealth in the natural environment and, additionally in this case, Juan Carlos and Itzíar do it with the utmost respect for nature, coupled with the use of their environment, since they incorporate in the process the goodness of the hot springs at 43ºC that well in Caldas de Reis, which makes them unique for dermatological exfoliation.

The result from all of this is that they achieve products that perform in the best way to everyday situations of personal and domestic hygiene, as well as cosmetics, ranging from the care of the delicate skin of a baby or atopic skin, to the too conspicuous sponge for cleaning dishes.

Due to the benefits they present, such as the stimulation of blood circulation, prevention of cellulitis or capillary cyst formation, their 100% natural and biodegradable character, their aforementioned artisanal production and their maximum respect for the environment, they represent a clear alternative to synthetic sponges.

Their use, to the detriment of the latter, contributes to reducing the damage caused by the manufacture of industrial sponges obtained from cellulose, as well as reducing the exploitation of sea sponges. In the first case because it requires the consumption of a large amounts of energy and the use of chemicals for the decomposition of wood and extraction of cellulose. In the second because the process is very costly and clearly harmful to the seas, in particular to the reefs where they breed and which may be affected.
